Tilapia

The Mozambique Tilapia is a common cichlid fish native to southern Africa. It is a popular fish for aquaculture.

We saw these at Intaka with the males in their breeding colours

The female carries her hatchling in her mouth for safety.

As soon as there is any danger, she inhales them back into her mouth.

The Tilapia feed mostly on algae, diatoms, invertebrates, small fry and vegetation’
