Grey Heron

The Grey Heron (Afrikaans name, Bloureier) is a large heron and a common resident at pans, lakes, dams and slow moving rivers.

We have seen them at Intaka Island in Century City, at the West Coast National Park, at Rietvlei Nature Reserve and at Strandfontein Sewage Works.

They hunt stealthily, often frozen in one position for an hour, feeding mainly on fish but we have witnessed them taking a bird and a mouse.
