Western Barn Owl

The Western Barn Owl (African name, Nonnetjie-uil) is a common resident in most open habitats, roosting in old buildings, hollow trees and mine shafts.

This is the first one we have sighted at the Rietvlei Nature reserve, it was quite a surprise coming across this one. He flew off the railings outside the bird hide and I was lucky enough to find where he flew to, managing to get a few photos before he flew off again, we haven’t seen him since.
