Pelican, Great White

The Great White Pelican, (Afrikaans name, Witpelikaan) is a huge bird with a wingspan of some 3m, although they may appear clumsy on land, they look so effortless in the sky.

When out fishing they create a circle around the fish whilst diving into the centre of the circle to catch the fish.

They quite a common sight at the Rietvlei Nature reserve and we see them fly over our house in the morning on their way out to the inland dams and again in the evening on their return.

We feel so privileged to have them living right in the middle of such a built up area.
