Giraffe

The giraffe (Kameelperd, Afrikaans name) an animal that looks sort of like a tall horse. With its long neck and tough blue tongue it is able to rip off the sweetest young leaves from the tops of trees. We met up with this one in the Kruger National Park.

Giraffes are very susceptible to attack from lions as this is one of their favourite foods, after antelope that is. The Giraffe has special valves in its neck to prevent excessive blood pressure to its head when stooping to drinks.

Strangely, the Giraffe has only 7 neck vertebrae, the same as humans.
