African Jacana

The African Jacana (Grootlangtoon, Afrikaans name) is known mostly as the bird with huge feet that walks on lily pads. It feeds mostly on aquatic insects and their larvae also small fish and crustaceans. The Jacana build their nest on the water lily pads and once the female has laid her last egg the male takes over all the parental duties.

We saw these at Lake Panic in the Kruger National Park

The little chicks have the biggest feet with the tiniest bodies
